Notes:

Within every family there are certain legends and tales, some true, some embellished, some ar e so overstated and combined with unverifiable sayings, persons, places or happenings borde r on fiction. One lettered writer stated his ancestor was with Daniel Boone at a certain his torical event, but the named ancestor was not born until years after the event. As the recor ds of the event gave very few names, some ancestor could have been there. Another said "Th e story was told that the Ridenours were close friends of Marie Antoinette [born 1755, daught er of Francis Stefan born 1708, son of Leopold Joseph born 1683-died 1729], and planned to br ing her to their home in America when things became difficult for her, but the plan failed an d she was executed." Again the dates were such that make it hard to believe, but some Rideno urs could have tried a rescue. It is said the Reidenauer family lived on the Rhine river in the Rugesian mountains near Kob lenz, Germany, in Shadeneck castle, built probably by Pertinax Reidenauer, who was killed, ac cidently by an arrow in 893 A. D. His two sons, by his wife Fredegunde Von Ekenen, were Conr ad and Williband. Williband married Henreitta Von Westerburg. They had a son, Heinrich, wh o lived in the castle, and was not bothered by Rudolph of Hapsburg who destroyed more then si xty castles along the Rhine. A family legend tells of a George Reitenauer (parents not known ), a knight in the 1200s, serving bravely in the sevices of Rudolph of Hapsburg was believe d to be the reason for this protection. The family of Rudolph I (1218-1291) of Hapsburg wer e of Swiss origin and upon the death of his father, Albert IV, in 1239 became Count of Uppe r Alsace. Rudolph's mother was Heilwic of Kiburg. By 1300 George was the only man in this f amily still living. At the age of nineteen he married Countess Isabella Fontenay, of Frenc h origin. George died in 1327 of wounds received in the Frierischon War, leaving three sons , Joschim, Tancred, and Bernhard. It is said that Bernhard carried off Anna Von Bauerheim , the daughter of Herman Von Bauerheim, Mayor of a city on the Rhine. Bernhard later marrie d Anna and she died at the birth of their son Nicholas. Bernhard died in bed at a ripe age i n 1374. Nicholas married twice and left four sons, Rudolph, Robert, Care and Ferdinand befor e dying in 1386 in the battle of Sempach. Care and Ferdinand went and lived in Thuringen. R obert went off to battle and no further word of him. Rudolph lived at Shadeneck castle. The noble family of von Reitenau stood in the services of the younger ruler of Kiburg, carri ed as of 1350. Ignacious Reidenauer, sixteen years old, lived with his mother's brother, Hugh Von Weiserhei m in the Palatinate ( German-Pflaz). He settled near Heidleburg on an estate given him durin g the Thirty Years War by his uncle. Anna Von Reitnau born 1318 in Hopfenbach, Krain Kronlaende, Austria married Meindard Von Aue rsperg in 1337 Hopfenbach, Krain Kronlaende, Austria. How we connect to the above families is not presently known. It is believed our known conne ction is starting here. One researcher speculates our ancestors lived in Reitnau, Aargau, Switzerland, near Gondiswi ll, from which they took its name. [Or did Reitnau take its name from them?] No records of our ancestors have been located in this area. In the 300 years, from the 120 0 s when surnames were beginning to be used to the time of our records, about 1500, a lot o f changes have occured. Records in Lower or Central Alsace [present-day Bas-Rhin and Haut-Rh in] FRA indicates our ancestors were known to be from the canton of Bern, SWIT. The earlies t located records have been from Lutheran church, at Waldhambach, Alsace, France, listing the m as living in Tieffenbach. In 1700's some of the family left Tieffenbach, Alsace, France, g oing to Rotterdam, getting on a ship arriving in Philadelphia, PA. This trip lasted possibl y up to about 6 months. -------------------------- A HISTORY OF THE REITNOUR [REIDENAUER] FAMILY Copied from "Reitnour History" by George Fredrick Reitnour, 1983, PA Julius Caesar's first campaign into the barbarian country known as Gaul ended on the banks o f the Rhine, east of the Vosges Mountains. Across the Rhine lay the Black Forest, while ahea d of him lay the heartland of Europe. Why did Caesar turn back? His history of the Gallic c ampaign does not say, but we can guess what happened. Proceeding toward the Northern [Lower ] Vosges Valley, Caesar began to meet ferocious resistance from the inhabitants of the Valle y: the Western Leuci. [ While the moderns know the Leuci to have been just another branch o f the Celtic tribes whose descendants still roam coastal France, Wales and Ireland, Ceasar ne ver referred to the Leuci as Celtae. Their languages seemed similar, but there the resemblan ces ended.] Caesar snatched the first noble excuse to get out of the Valley, and declaring h imself victorious, retreated southward to regroup. Eventually, Caesar subdued the Leuci, and they became an independant state--a civitas--calle d Triboci, with its Western center at Argentoratum [Strassbourg]. While Teutonic barbarian s crossed the Rhine from time to time [e.g. 167 AD] to interupt farming operations in the Val ley, Rome was able to placate the barbarians by allowing some of them to settle in the Valley . Triboci, which for centuries had produced wines far superoir to the Italian varieties, no w began to suffer under Rome's strict import tax on wines. When the Burgundians of Germany b egan to invade the country around 413, Triboci offered little resistance. The barbarians eve ntually settled in France, but many stayed behind to mingle with the Valley people. In 451 , the Burgundians joined Triboci and Rome to defeat Attlia the Hun at Chalons. Nonetheless , Rome fell in 476, and the Valley fell deep into the Dark Ages following its conquest by Clo vis the Frank in 496. The battle must have been a close one, for Clovis and 3000 of his me n converted to Christianity in the course of it. While times were bad for the Valley, Charle magne's reign as Emperor provided a brief interlude of peace. Then, in 842, after Charlemagn e died, his children split the Empire into three parts in an agreement made at Strassbourg : Charles got France: Louis got Germany; Lothair got the middle scraps, including the Rhin e Valley. This Strassbourg Oath, as it came to be called, set the stage for 1000 years of ar med conflict between France and Germany to gain control of Lothair's inheritance along the Rh ine. First, the Holy Romans of Greater Germany seized it from Lothair's people. Then, Loui s XIV of France moved into the territory in 1648 under the Peace of Westphalia, following a p eriod of usurpation which began in 1643 against the will of the Valley people, who were now b ecoming known as the Alsatians. The Alsatians felt themselves to be German, and spoke German , so that the gradual takeover by the French, which culminated in 1792, when France abolishe d the feudal rights of the German princes in Alsace, caused considerable upheaval. Among the fortunate German elements who left Alsace during this period were Hans Reidenaue r and his wife Mary. Those who remained behind saw Germany regain the territory in 1871, onl y to lose it to France in the Great War. Germany took the Valley again in World War II, bu t the Allies returned it to France after the war.
