Was a miller in village of Oberdigisheim, in Chief Bailiwick of Balingen,between Tubingen an d Rottweil, on road from Zurich to Stuttgart, inSwabia. Arrived at Philadelphia on ship Osgoo d on 29 Sep 1750. Marriagemay have been his second. Purchased 128 1/2 acres in Earl Twp., Lan casterCo., from Patrick Baird. His widow paid off the mortgage on the land in1757 after his d eath. Birth date from Ellene. Andreas Harter was the progenitor of the Harter family in America. He was a miller living a t Oberdigisheim, Chief Bailwick of Balingen, Black Forest District, Wuerttemberg, Germany. Ba lingen is about 35 kilometers SSW from Tubingen, and about the same distance NNE from Rottwei l, and is on the main road north from Zurich, Switzerland to Stuttgart, Germany. He marrie d on 25 October 1724, Anna Catharina Zahner, a daughter of Peter Zahner, a weaver. This marri age, the baptism for 16 of their children, death of 9 of those children, are all recorded i n the Lutheran Parish Register of Oberdigisheim. Andreas and his family apparently started t heir emigration to America between 1745 and 1748. Along with many other German families of th eir time, the first part of this journey, and by no means an easy one, was the trip down th e Rhine to Holland. There were many custom houses at each of which the ships were examined an d detained, so that this trip often took six weeks or longer. Upon arrival in Holland there w as another delay before boarding the ship to England. All of these ships had to land in som e English port before starting the voyage proper to Philadelphia. In England there was ofte n another delay, waiting for cargo or favorable winds, etc. Many of the passengers had enoug h money for their passage but it was used during these many delays. The trip from England t o America took from seven to twelve weeks or longer and caused much suffering. The people wer e densely packed without proper food and water and soon subject to all sorts of diseases. Mis ery reached a climax during storms at sea. Andreas Harter and his family, along with 486 oth er passengers, arrived in Philadelphia on the good ship Osgood on September 29, 1750. On thi s same ship was Gottlieb Mittelberger, who was delivering a new organ to a church in Providen ce Township, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, and the author of "Journey to Pennsylvania" . This is an account of the actual trip made by the Andreas Harter family. A new translatio n of this book, published in 1960 by Harvard University Press, Cambridge 38, Mass. may be pur chased from them for $3.00. Andreas Harter purchased 128 acres of land in Earl Township, Lan caster County, Pennsylvania on October 22, 1751. The next day he mortgaged this to James Aber crimble of Rotterdam as security for 200 pounds lawful money. Andreas Harter was the first g eneration of the Harter family in America. His son, Mathias, accompanied the family on the tr ip from Germany and was apparently lamed due to a fall during the long journey. Mathias, thro ugh his son George Harter, was the progenitor of the Harter lineage which for several generat ions owned a farm at Hall's Corners, Springfield Township, Allen County, Indiana. Andreas di ed sometime before April 12, 1757, the date that his wife Anna Catharina Harter, Michael Rhin e, and Jacob Glazer furnished bond for the administration of his property.
