Notes:

Refering to John, son of Edward and Elizabeth, Ralph Bennett wrote: John Bennet moved to Connecticut in 1656, when he was 26. He traveled about 50 miles southw est from Rehoboth, across the state of Rhode Island, to the southeast corner of Connecti cut, where there was a pleasant valley and saltwater cove on Long Island Sound. The land had belonged to the Pequot Indians who were massacred in 1637 by the Narra gansetts and whites. William Cheesebrough of Rehoboth was the first settler at a place calle d Wequetequock in what was then called the Mystic and Pawcatuck area. By 1668, there were 4 3 heads of families, including John Bennet, who drew lots for home sites in the village. B y then, John Bennet had married and started a family. He and Ursula White of Stonington ha d 10 children, it is said, but we know the names of only five of them. The first John, bor n Feb. 24, 1659, died when he was four years old. William was born in 1660. Rapid-fire birth s were usual in the early stages of matrimony in those days, so there may have been other chi ldren before the second son named John was born in 1666. A daughter, Elizabeth, was born i n 1672. Joseph was born in 1681. From the diary of Thomas-1 Miner we learn that a: "John benit& his wife whiped upon th e .13th of June 1661." This John Bennetmay not be identical with John-1 because on "The 16. o f februarie 1663. John Benit died and was Buried the 18 day," well before the family of John- 1 was complete.

Notes:

Edward Bennett sailed from Weymouth, England to Weymouth MA with his wife and 4 children in 1636. There he took up as he was entitled to thirty-six acres of public land. He was made a freeman in 1636. After a residence there for seven years he became an original proprietor in the company that founded Rehoboth, to which place he removed in 1643 with a certain Rev. Newman. He died at Rehoboth in 1645, an original proprietor wealthy, and was buried in Proprietor's cemetary. (Isabel (Bennett) Ridell, The Other Bennetts, Chemung County [New York] Historical Society, 415 E. Water Street, Elmira, New York, 14901). The following excerpt was taken from Nine Yankee Farmers: A Bennett Line From 1636 to 1916 by Ralph B. Bennett Jr. ([San Diego, CA, April 1990]) in which notes from the Boston Transcript, published November 24, 1930, are quoted "Note 2417. BENNETT. From papers belonging to Rev. George S. Bennett": Edward Bennett, born in England, came with his wife Elizabeth, and four children, and settled in Weymouth, Mass. in 1636, where land was given to him. Made freeman at General Court held in Boston, May 26, 1636. Resided in Weymouth seven years, when he joined the Rev. Newman's company, and became one of the original proprietors of that part of Rehoboth, Mass., called Seakonk, near Providence, R.I., moving there with his family in 1643. He died in 1645-6. I recently recieved this e mail Dear Jeromey...... My name is Shannon Stover-Bennett, and I'm researching my husband's family and came across yo ur family tree on rootsweb.com. I'm having extreme difficulty in my research because I've rec eived so many conflicting stories from others about the Bennett line. This is what I do know, my husband's father and grandfather talked about three brothers arriv ing in the "New World" from England. I've tracked these brothers (I hope) to William, Edward , and Richard. My problem is filling in the gaps. Right now I stop with a Jesse Bennett b. ab t 1776 d. 1846, married to a Pamelia Ann Moss b. 6 June, 1800. I received an email from someo ne showing how my husband's line fits together - it was written by her grandfather. Here is w hat she sent me: The first that history records by the name "Bennett" to come to the American continent were s even men all young, they sailed from London,England during the year 1622 and landed at Jamest own, Virginia. the same year, and of the number three of them were brothers, the other four w ere only relatives, and they went North from Virginia up the Atlantic coast, some settling i n State of New York, others in the State of Maine. the three brothers remained in Virginia an d in order to destinguish themselves from the four relatives and thus off spring, in the futu re, they added an extra "T" to their name spelling it "Bennett". The christian names of the three brothers were William, Edward and Richard. they were Scotis h Presbyterians. During the year 1637 William Bennett migrated from Virginia to Weymouth, Mas s and about that time others of the same name landed on the North American coast, sailing fro m Scotland, Ireland and England all spelling the name with but one "T" The remaining brothers Edward and Richard remained in Virginia and made their home at "Culpep per Court House" Virginia. and from 1652 to 1655 Richard Bennett was Govenor of the "Colony o f Virginia" and died during the year 1684 at the age of 84 years leaving three sons and two d aughters. One of these sons, John, was the writers g-g-grandfather and a son of John by nam e Joseph was the writiers g- grandfather, he was thrown from a horse in his middle age and ki lled, leaving three sons, their names were Joel, Samuel and Jesse. Jesse being the writers gr andfather, was born in Farquis County Virginia, July 4, 1776. and when a boy in his teens mov ed with his parents from Culpepper Virginia to Christian County Ky and there married Pamela A nn Moss. She was born in Christian County Ky June 6, 1800 her mothers maiden name was May Fra nklin, a first cousin of Benjamin Franklin. When the writers grandfather and grandmother wer e married during the year 1818, grandfather was 42 years old and grandmother was 18 years o f age and during the year 1821 they moved from Christian County, KY. to Anderson County KY. t o them were born 14 children, eleven sons and three daughters. two sons and one daughter die d in infancy, nine sons and two daughters lived to be grown men and women and the names of th e eleven that lived to mature age are herewith inumerated in regular order. John Moss, died a t San Antonio Texas in 1860. Margaret Ann, died San Antonio Tx 1862(never married) Mary Cathe rine born April 15 1827 married Joseph Clark of Scotisborg, Ind. and died there in 1912. Joe l Merit died San Antionio, Tx 1903. David Walker ( the writers father) born in Anderson Count y Ky october 11,1830 died at Hondo Tx 1913. James Monroe died at Seguin, Tx_____? Granville S amuel died at San Morcos, Tx 1880. Benjamin Franklin died in Los Angeles, Ca 1897. Jordon Wal ker died San Antonio TX 1866 ( Samuel jesse, and George Henry, the youngest of the family, we re twins) Samuel Jesse died at Lake Charles, LA 1863 while a captain in the confederate army , George Henry died at San Marcos TX. Going back to the writers grandfather "Jesse Bennett" he was a highly educated man, travele d quite extensively for one of his time (prior to marriage) was aquainted with George Washing ton, Thomas Jefferson, Madison and Monroe he and ex-president Monroe were buson friends he di ed in Anderson County Ky in 1846 at the age of 70 years. The writers father David Walker Benn ett with his mother, one sister and seven brothers moved by wagon train from Anderson Count y Ky to San Antoio Tx in 1852.(his eldest brother John having moved there a few years prior ) they brought with them standard Bred Kentucky horses, shorthorn Durham cattle, Birkshire ho gs and Kentucky sheep. ------------ Does any of this look familiar, and if not, do you know where I can go for further help. Also , the James Monroe Bennett mentioned above is my husband's 2nd greatgrandfather. Anyway, I hope I'm not being an intrusion or asking too much - I just wish I could fit the pi eces together. Thank you so much for any help you can give. EDWARD1 BENNETT was born Bet. 1575 - 1607 in Wiltshire, England, and died 1645 in Rehoboth, B ristol, Ma. (buried in Proprietor's cem.). He married ALICE EGINGTON October 27, 1622 in E ngland. She was born Bet. 1584 - 1609 in England, and died Bet. 1633 - 1698. Notes for EDWARD BENNETT: 1. Taken from the Book entitled "The Other Bennetts", authored by Isabel (BENNETT) Ridell an d information obtained from the Chemung County Historical Society, of Chemung New York, 415 E . Corispondence received 17 September, 1996: Genealogical and Family Historie s of THE WYOMING AND LACKAWANNA VALLEYS PENNSYLVANIA: dated 1906: BENNETT FAMILY. "Mihi Consulit Deus." Such is the motto of that branch of the Bennett famil y under consideration here; "a very ancient family of which a pedigree of thirteen descendant s is recorded in the "College of Arms," says Burke; and a family, according to accepted aut hority "of the order of decent gentry," who were descended from two brothers of Berkshire wh o migrated to London toward the close of the sixteenth century. The Immigrant ancestor of th e family in America was Edward Bennett, of Wiltshire, England, who was one of the first colon ists of Weymouth, in New England; Freeman there in 1636, and one of the founders of Rehoboth , Massachusetts, where he died 1646. 3. Notes:

William was a bricklayer by trade and worked at the Iron Works in Lynn, Massachusetts at on e point. His work took him to other locations in New England as well. In February 1655 he wa s at Warwick, Rhode Island. He was granted a house lot adjoining his son-in-law "Benjamine He rndell" [Benjamin Harrington] on 17 October 1656. That same year, he had supervised the brick laying at Winthrop's stronghold on Fisher's Island and had been in Providence, Rhode Island . On 27 February 1657, William was granted a share for his "meddow" near another son-in-law , Thomas Walling. He was settled in Boston again by 16 October 1662. He bought a house on tow n land from Nathaniel Woodward, for which he had to pay rent to the town. (Suffolk Deeds, 7:1 10) This land was later granted to William on 14 March 1669/70. (Boston Record Commissioners , 7th Report, p. 53, 1881) Apparently the relationships within the family were not always smooth. On 17 February 1659, B enjamin Hearnden [Benjamin Harrington] became involved with the law in regard to his "breac h of peace and fright, Comitted [sic] on the family of william white, of this Towne." In a se parate incident, William's daughter, Margaret, already married to Robert Colwell, ran away wi th her married neighbor, Thomas Walling; both deserted their families. Colwell secured his di vorce 2 July 1667; Margaret had returned to Boston and was ordered to be publicly whipped 1 5 stripes and was fined £5 in October 1666. Colwell went to Long Island, Walling also obtaine d a divorce and he married Margaret in 1669. After his death in 1674, her third husband, Dani el Abbott, took her to court. Apparently they reconciled, she was named in his will. William White made his will 13 October 1673. His wife was to have "all my vissable estate s o long as she was a widowe and to have her thirds if she remarried; two Sonnes Isaacke & Corn elius White; two sonnes & 1 daughter Susanna Waggett, wife of Thomas Waggett after the deceas e of wife; to son William White 5 shillings... to other 3 daughters, Elyzabeth Harnden, wif e of Benjamyne... Margaret Wallen, wife of Thomas Wallen, and Usrulla Bennett, the wife of Jo hn Bennett each 4 shillings." The will was proved 31 January 1673/4. From the probate records , William may have died on 30 October 1673. On 28 Dec 1676, William's widow signed her mark to the following: "Elizabeth White of Boston , relict of William White late of Boston, deeded for love etc. to her Son Cornelius White tha t part of land which his father (bequeathed to him) excepting the house wherein I dwell whic h is his after my decease and which I reserve to my Selfe during my life."
