Charles L. Ward was the Daughter of William Clark and Ann Margaret Heldenbrand. His mother a ttempted to get the pension of her husband, Jacob Ward, but after her death it was disallowe d when her father in a sworn statement said that Charles was the son of William Clark.

This is a narrative written by my Uncle about Jacob and the Regiment heserved with. The Regiment was organized at Camp Chase*, Ohio, May 12, 1864 to serveone hundred days. It wa s composed of the Forty-eighth Regiment OhioNational Guard, from Richland County; Seventy-sec ond Battalion, OhioNational Guard, from Henry County; Ninety-sixth Battalion, Ohio NationalGu ard, from Ashland County; and the Ninety- ninth Battalion, OhioNational Guard from Stark Coun ty. On the 13th of May the Regimentproceeded to Washington City, under orders from General He intzelman,commanding the Department of Ohio. It was assigned to duty withheadquarters at For t Reno D.C., where it remained until the 8th of June,when it was ordered to the front, and pr oceeded in transports to WhiteHouse, Va. and thence to Bermuda Hundred. It reported to Genera l Butler,at Point of Rocks, on the 12th of June, and on the 14th took part in areconnaissanc e on the Petersburg and Richmond Railroad. Two hundred andfifty men of the One Hundred and si xty-third were engaged in a severeskirmish on the 15th, and on the 16th it proceeded to Wilso n's Landing,and from that point made several reconnaissance to the west side of theJames. O n the 29th of August the Regiment was relieved from duty, andproceeded to Columbus, Ohio. an d was mustered out September 10, 1864, onexpiration of term of service. * Camp Chase was a hastily thrown-together barracks 4 miles west ofColumbus, Ohio on the pik e (National Road Route 40) copied from; Official Roster of Soldiers of the State of Ohio in the War of theRebellion Vol. 9 page 321 J acob Ward is listed under Co. She was murdered by her second husband. Virgil, Frank and Ira were worried about her and wen t to Bucyrus to check on her. One of them received a letter that didn't sound like she was a lright. They talked to her husband and he kept changing his his story and they became suspec t.They got the police and they searched the house and found her body in a back porch of the h ouse frozen. She had been hit in the head several times by a fireplace poker.

Simon Hoover 9/18/1826 10/18/1894 Simon Hoover, farmer: he owns 218 acres of land, which he under thebest cultivation, and is w ell improved. His farm is a part of section 1.He was born in Maryland, where his father, Henr y H., and mother were alsoborn, and when he was 4 years of age they migrated to Ohio and sett ledfirst in Washington Township. They next moved on the land where thesubject of this sketc h now resides, which was then all under timber. Inthe early days, a tree fell upon one of h is brothers and killed him,which his father had chopped off; it was near the present site o f hisresidence. Mr. Hoover's was born Sept. 29,1790 and died on his birth-dayin 1856. Mr. H oover was born Sept. 19,1828 Louisa Timanus was born inMansfield, Ohio, April 5,1829. They we re married March 20, 1851; therechildren are Emeline, who died in childhood; Albert, born Nov . 7,1852;Hulbert and Charles (twins), Sept. 23,1854; Hulda, Aug. 5,1857; Lincoln,April 10,186 0; William, May 8,1862; Sheridan, March 28,1865; Cyrus, Nov.22,1867; Samuel, May 29,1869; Jen nie, Sept. 11,1872. Cyrus died June28,1868; Samuel, Oct. 10,1873 After marriage, Mr. Hoover l ived upon hisgrandfather's farm six years, and then upon the farm he no owns. He, hiswife an d two children are members of the Lutheran Church, and he is anElder. Two of his sons attende d the Mansfield Normal School the wintersof 1879-80, and the elder one is preparing to teach . Mr. Hoover id amember of a family of eleven children, six boys and five girls.
