She is 81 years of age and haseighteen grandchildren, s eventeen great grandchildren by Grace Bowman Since her writing Grace has pasted away on August 31, 1989. Shejoined Don Hugh at Bunker Hil l Cemetery STORIES OF NEWVILLE TOLD TO ROGER WARD BY D.H. BOWMAN Hugh Bowman was the grandfather of Roger Ward . Roger's mother, Majorie was Hugh's only da ughter. One evening in the late 50's around the summer of 1959 my Grand father and I were si tting on his back porchof his house on Bunker Hill North Road. We were looking at the moon a nd speculating about men walking on the moon. Grand father was commentingthat he was born i n 1901 before the Wright brothers had flown and now men were planning on traveling into spa ce. Some how the subject changed to things that happened in Newville when he was a young ma n and how he had worked on a huxster wagon trading with the local farmers for produce to sel l in his brother's (Hoy) general store . Grandfather told me about his favorite horse "Fan " he said the horse was very smart and trust worthy. He said while he was dating myGrand mot her Grace Bemiller, that he would take her home from a date thenwrap the reins around the whi p stand then curl up on the seat and go tosleep. Fan would then proceed to go home on her ow n and Grandfather wouldwake up in his own barn. He would unhitch the horse and go to bed. H e noted that he had bought Fan in a neighboring town of Perrysville. One summer day he had ta ken grandmother to a outing some where between Newville and Perrysville. He did his normal r outine and went to sleep in the buggy but to his surprise he woke up in a strange barn Fan h ad went to the barn of her previous owner who lived close to Perrysville. Fan had decided th at she would return to her old home.. Another time Grandfather told me he was driving a team of horses hitched to a sleigh on a co ld winter day . He said he knew he had a fast team.Another sleigh with two boys challenged h im to a race. Grandfather let his team run head and head with them then he let them pull ahe ad.. As they went ahead he dropped in behind them , then he urged his horses up until the h ot, steamy, slobbering breath from his team was blasting down on the heads of the boys i n the sleigh ahead. The boys tried to speed up , but Grandfather's team was stronger and fa ster and they could not get away. Finally he took mercy on them and he pulled out and passe d them. One of his favorite stories he would tell me was about a mare that had a problem. Well I gues s I'll call it a bladder problem. I don't remember if she belonged to grandfather or his brot her Hoy. This mare could not control her water if she was going downhill and the single tre e of the buggy rig was hitting her in the back of her rear legs. When the single tree hit h e legs she would lift her tail and relieve her self . This would give the passengers in the b uggy a unwanted nasty shower. Hoy and grandfather over come the situation by tying a piece of twine around the horse's t ail then tying the other end around the single tree. This would prevent the mare from liftin g her tail and she would not release her water. Grandfather said they sold the horse to a l ocal young man in Newville and they explained the need for the twine. Sometime later thei r was a ice cream social in Newville . Hoy had asked a girl to go with him but she turned hi m down she had a date with the man that they had bought the mare. Neither Grandfather or Ho y had a date so they were going to the social without dates. On their way they passed the hou se of the girl that had turned Hoy down . Out in front of herhouse tied to the hitching ra il stood the mare with her tail tied down.Hoy walked over and cut the twine, then they wen t on to to social. "Oh" did I mention that from her house to Newville was down hill ? My gr andfather said the young man and his date never made it to the social.

Notes:

James was a farmer, but a poor farmer. He was not motivated enough to really go after it. M attie was the ambitious one. He butchered animals for people all over the county during the w inter. Mattie always went with him to clean out the casings. During the summer he ran a thr eshing engine complete with steam engine. My grandmother thinks this may be why Don Hugh wa s so interested in steam engines. She was known all over the county for her sausage casings . My grandmother told me when she was born, in February of 1923, it was so very cold that Ja mes used to hold her all the time. They were afraid to clean her off for she catch a cold . She said for her first month of life he hardly ever put her down. She said he always had a t least one grandchild on his knee. She says itwas usually her. When he died, he had been h aving pains in his arm, and was supposed to go to the doctor on Monday, and this was Sunday . Mattie and he went up to Shelby to visit his sister Huldah. My grandmother said that sh e was at her uncle Hoy's and had to go up to Grandma's to get the washing. She talked to hi m up at the house and he said that he felt so much better and had such a good time. Mattie s aid he went to bed and she heard him make a noise, and when she went in to check on him he wa s dead. In town they heard the dinner bell and a woman screaming and someone realized that i t was Mattie Bowman. My grandmother can remember going to see him in the bedroom. They ha d put pennies over his eyes.
